Our Screen & Media (Integrated Journalism) Diploma is an innovative one year course encompassing interactive media principles and broadcast opportunities arising from current digital and social media production techniques. Practically focused, you learn the theory not in a stuffy lecture hall or tutorial room, but by doing what's required to work in industry. More like an internship, I.D.E.A.'s Diploma is located one day a week at Melbourne's JOY/FM and the other two days at SYN and I.D.E.A. Curriculum covers live radio production and presentation, TV production and presentation, interviewing skills, digital editing, research techniques, radio documentary and feature making, writing for the web, website development, photo journalism and public relations. International Media Opportunities: The Institute's European bilingual internet radio station partner, Radio Aquitaine, based at IUT Bordeaux University IV, Perigueux in South West France provides students with an opportunity to present programs either in French and/or English. Last year a select number of students received fully funded scholarships to travel to Kuwait and filed stories to media networks in Australia. Guest lecturers are a key component of the course. Lecturers include practitioners from ABC TV and Radio, ABC Digital Media, SBS Radio/TV and online journalism, conducting specialist workshops in interviewing skills, advanced radio feature making, presentation skills, covering press conferences and writing for the web.
Students are responsible for presenting a weekly one hour magazine/music program on Melbourne's student youth network SYN/FM, and work on the television breakfast program "Get Cereal" and the music show "1700" on Melbourne's Channel 31. Students also write for the online journalism network New Australia Media and produce all media stories into an accessible online format, consistent with current industry practice.
