The Class of 2010
We're into Semester Two - The ever entertaining Photographer, Garrie Maguire is teaching students the history of photo journalism and the art of this little taught profession. We're out in the streets learning how to communicate to an audience through lighting, shot content, colour and movement, and then writing copy to accompany photos.
Students have been busy completing their advanced media production. This assignment involves researching, writing, undertaking interviews, mixing a variety of audio elements, applying final narration and multi-layered editing techniques to a 10 to 15 minute feature - Radio or TV. As their work progresses students learn how to develop a narrative, analyse structure, methods of recording audio and visual material, the application of a variety of sounds and sound montage techniques.
Topics students chose to explore for their Advanced Media Feature include gaming addiction, the banning of the burka, dangers of solariums, the musical loves of former High Court Judge Justice Michael Kirby, comedy clubs in Melbourne, does hip hop create delinquents, the World Cup, testing products on animals, and music song rights.

Media Internships are big this term at a variety of radio, TV, print and online networks. Several students have placements at a number of sports media outlets, and regional TV, radio and print networks.
The effervescent Natasha is currently undertaking a placement at a large publishing house assisting in the Marketing and Publicity division. And Natalie has just completed a week with Network Ten.
Our resident writer, Sean Collins has been crewing on an innovative pilot series for Ch 31 and working diligently on his weekly podcasts, Pretentious Makes Perfect.
Justin Lui recently attended the Digital Sports Summit at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
"Approximately 200 people attended this corporate events, to be given an insight into the future of Sports Marketing and Management through the use of social media. There were nine speakers covering many topics - from what the NBA do, to looking at issues from an athlete's perspective. What I learnt from this inspiring day is that social media such as Facebook and Twitter will have a big influence on customorers/clients and their companies. Everyone wants news instantly these days, so making things conveneient for the customer is the number one priority, which assists profits".
Students continue to attend opening nights at the theatre to conduct reviews and interviews. A delegation of 15 Journalists from Kuwait are visiting Melbourne early November and students are helping arrange visits to various media networks, cultural groups, politicians, community leaders, and media coverage of the event.
The ever enthusiastic Brit-fanatic Brad is now presenting the weekly UK Top Ten on the Institute's European partner station, Radio Aquitaine, based at IUT Bordeaux University IV, Perigueux in South West France. Tim has completed two bilingual French/English classical music programs and Dan has completed producing and presenting several international Reggae Programs which are now on air on RA.
Pat and Dan have been commissioned to write an article each for the Wimmera Mail Times on behalf of the environmental land care group Trust for Nature. Well done guys.

One of our passionate and hard working Integrated Journalism students, Coralie Tapper recently landed the role of co-host on the popular Breakfast TV show Get Cereal presented by the Student Youth Network, on Channel 31 every weekday from 7.30 to 8.30am. Congratulations Coralie, and goodluck!

Students are attending opening nights at various theatres - MTC, Malthouse and Clocktower, where they write reviews for New Australia Media and conduct interviews and reviews on their weekly radio program on Fridays, 1 to 3pm on SYN/FM.
IJ student Tim Perry: The opening night of MTC's current production of Richard III has left in it's wake two intrepid, young journalists still starry-eyed and still riding the wave of post-Shakespearean euphoria – Coralie, a live-Shakespeare veteran, and never short of a comment, was left in awe-inspired speechlessness. And I, no longer a Shakespearean theatre virgin, am still coming down from the buzz of the night - I am addicted. Hook. Line. And sinker.

VISIT TO 3AW - NEIL MITCHELL
Integrated Journalism student Stefan writes about the students' recent visit to 3AW to watch one of Australias leading morning show presenters, Neil Mitchell, live on-air:
"Neil Mitchell is one of the most highly regarded radio presenters and talkback hosts operating in Australia, and after spending time with him there is little wonder why. Neil broadcasts between 8.30am and midday and during this time hundreds of people ring to get a chance to talk with Neil about topical current events.
We had the opportunity to put a face to the voice when, after the show in a private interview with Neil (which went well over our allocated 20 minutes), Neil shared his experiences during his time in the media.
Neil revealed how, as a boy he never dreamed of working in radio. At age 13 he worked as a paper boy which formulated his interest in news and current affairs. After completing his schooling at 17, Neil secured work with The Age, Melbournes daily morning newspaper, and worked there for 16 years, firmly grounding his feet in the industry.
The rest, as they say, is history. And btw, Neil's advice to journalists and journalism students was "don't take yourselves too seriously".
